Canceled Flights – Know Your Rights

Understanding your rights under European and international law after a cancelled flight.

Updated: 2025-06-27

When does cancellation compensation apply?

Under EU Regulation 261/2004 and United Kingdom law, you may be entitled to compensation if:

  • Your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before departure
  • The cancellation was not caused by extraordinary circumstances (like bad weather or air traffic control strikes).

How much compensation can you get?

If you're eligible, compensation depends on the distance of your flight:

Flight Distance Compensation
Less than 1,500 km €250
1,500 to 3,500 km €400
Over 3,500 km €600

If you accepted a replacement flight with a similar schedule, your compensation may be reduced by 50%.

Refund or rerouting — you always have a choice

Even if you're not eligible for compensation, you still have the right to choose between:

  • A full refund, or
  • A free alternative flight to your destination — either as soon as possible, or at a later date of your choice.

This right applies regardless of the cause of the cancellation.

What about flights outside Europe?

You also have rights in many countries outside the EU:

  • Canada (APPR): for flights with Canadian airlines, you may be entitled to up to $1,000 CAD if the cancellation was within the airline’s control.
  • Brazil (ANAC Resolution 400): passengers have the right to full refunds and rebooking. Airlines may also be liable for damages if the cancellation causes losses.
  • United States: if your flight is cancelled, you’re always entitled to a **full refund**, even for non-refundable tickets. Airlines may offer rebooking or vouchers, but you can insist on a refund.
  • Other countries may offer similar protections. Submit your claim and our legal team will assess your eligibility.

Extra help during long waits

If your cancellation causes an overnight stay or long wait, airlines may have to provide:

  • Meals and drinks
  • Hotel accommodation
  • Transportation to the hotel
  • Communication (calls, emails, etc.)

What to do if your flight was cancelled

  • Keep your booking confirmation and any airline messages.
  • Write down what the airline told you — reason for cancellation, rebooking offered, etc.
  • Save all receipts if you had to pay for food, hotels, or transport.
  • Don’t accept vouchers if you’d prefer a refund.
  • Start your claim online — we’ll guide you through the rest.

You might still be eligible — even if the airline said otherwise

Most airlines don’t always explain your full rights. Our system will check for you.
